Apartments overlook the 8th hole of Buckhead's Bobby Jones Golf Course, where a group of men who just watched the conclusion of the Masters gathered on a deck, golf clubs in hand, to reproduce their favorite moments.

As they imitated the weekend's most pivotal shots — Scottie Scheffler won it this year — it was a reminder excitement for golf around the Atlanta's revamped Bobby Jones course has returned.

Not long ago, it had developed a reputation as place a serious golfer should probably avoid. But, after a $33 million renovation the circa-1932 course is consistently filled throughout the week.

Why it matters: When upgrades were officially completed in the fall of 2020, it was just months after the most intense lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, improvements to the pathways that encircle the course have linked the BeltLine Connector Trail to Memorial Park. Now, almost any warm, sunny afternoon the course is a center of outdoor activity in Buckhead, with the greens dotted with players as people stream past on the trails.

Deeper Dive: The three-year renovation included several additions such as an instructional center for kids and a new high-tech golf shop. There is a new driving range, a short game practice area, but at the heart of the renovation is the reversible nine-hole course.

Hall of Fame designer: The makeover of Bobby Jones was designed by the late architect Bob Cupp. It was his last project. He was one of the most prominent golf course designers of this era, according to the Georgia State Golf Association. Cupp was the first architect to be selected for induction into the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame in 2014. Locally, his work included Ansley Golf Club’s Settindown Creek in Roswell, Hawks Ridge in Ball Ground, and Marietta Country Club.
